Eighteen of the 21 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded Monday in Moruca, North-West District, Region One.

This is according to Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Public Health Terrence Esseboom who noted that the other three cases are from Regions Seven and Nine.

The first confirmed COVID-19 patient in Moruca –59-year-old Vincent Torres –was tested after he died on May 25.

Subsequently, a primary school teacher was tested positive in Santa Rosa on June 10 and two other cases were confirmed on June 12.

On June 18, the Region recorded 12 cases within a 24-hour period.

As a result, there are now over 42 cases in the Region One sub-district.

The Ministry of Public Health noted that the cases are as a result of community transmission.

The News Room contacted Regional Health Officer Dr. Steve Cheefoon to verify whether the Region has adequate facilities for isolation of patients, however, he declined to comment stating that he is busy and will issue a statement.

The total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Guyana as of June 22 are 205.
