A fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the ND&S Furniture factory and everything in it at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara Thursday night.

The fire started around 10:30 p.m. and also damaged a three-storey building which stored furniture and housed the main office. The owner, Parasram Mahadeo, resided on the top floor.

Mr Mahadeo was inside the building when the fire started. Neighbours noticed smoke emanating from the factory and quickly alerted Mr Mahadeo and called the Guyana Fire Service.

“The entire factory was destroyed.

“…we had in stock from wood to ply to fabric. All machinery, everything, was destroyed.

“The building caved in and everything was destroyed,” Mahadeo’s daughter, Natasha, told the News Room.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze from spreading to the three-storey building, but it was already damaged.

The News Room understands that residents managed to save some items that were on display on the ground floor.

The Fire Service is continuing its investigation into the fire.

The family says it is too early to ascertain the losses.
