Change Guyana on Wednesday night called on Justice Claudette Singh, the chair of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), to act expeditiously and declare the PPP the winner of the March 02 elections.

In a statement, Nigel Hinds, the Chairman of the party, said the findings of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Wednesday came as no surprise.

The CCJ ruled that the Court of Appeal had no power to seek to add any meaning to Article 177 (2) (b) of the Constitution and deemed the decision to be of no effect. The Chief Elections Officer had sought to rely on the ruling to prepare an elections report that makes APNU+AFC the winner of the elections when a national vote recount clearly established that the PPP had won and Irfaan Ali should be declared President and sworn in.

“We’re now at another crossroad; there is another opportunity for GECOM chair to act with the power vested in her and to make a declaration forthwith,” Hinds said in a statement.

He said that the elections was turned into a circus and the reputation of GECOM has been tarnished. But he said Justice Singh can act to bring the matter to a close.

He said the country needs a rational, inclusive and caring government at this time as the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hinds lambasted the APNU+AFC for using the past year to maintain power and deny the will of the people.

He called on the international community to start acting against the players, including constitutional agencies, which have aided the Coalition in continuing to deny the will of the people.
