A huge fire has engulfed the Lusignan prison facility on the East Coast of Demerara.
Residents in the area told the News Room that the prisoners started a protest early Sunday at the penitentiary after which the facility went up in flames.
Residents also told the News Room that they heard prisoners screaming.
Persons in the area went live on their Facebook page showing the facility on fire. Some three fire tenders are at the scene along with the Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels.
