Attempts made to burn down CID building in Essequibo

Several items in the Criminal Investigation Department office at the Anna Regina Police Station, Essequibo Coast, were on Tuesday morning destroyed after someone attempted to burn down the building.

A substance suspected to be kerosene was found on the floor of the office.

The CID office building is located on the northeastern corner of the Anna Regina Police Station. The building also housed the offices of the Prosecutor and the Special Constabulary, the Regional Court Prosecutor and the Regional Detective Inspector.

Police said between 05:00h and 05:06hrs on Tuesday, a Constable was making checks around the compound when he observed smoke emanating from the Regional Detective Inspector’s Office (RDI).

The Guyana Fire service was called to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire.

The News Room understands that investigators found that a louvre from the window on the northern side of the building was removed and placed on the street below the window.

The window is located one foot in height from the ten feet chain link fence which surrounds the building.

There are no electrical items nor points on that side of the building, Police said.

No one has been arrested and investigations are ongoing.
