Porter dies after jumping from toppling tractor

A 25-year-old porter died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Tuesday after he jumped from a tractor that was toppling down a hill on the Arawai Trail, Mazaruni River.

Dead is Mahendra Verria of Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

Police Headquarters said Verria and another porter, Sunny Moore of Cornelia Ida, WCD was on the tractor which was descending a hill when the driver lost control yesterday morning.

The tractor was also towing a motor lorry which was being steered by another driver. The vehicles are owned by C.B Construction Inc.

After losing control of the tractor, the driver also jumped to safety and was followed by Verria and Moore, however, only the porters received injuries about the head and body.

They were rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital where Moore was admitted and Verria was subsequently air dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition. He died at about 15:00h.

Both drivers are in police custody assisting with the investigation.
