Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Nigel Dharamlall on Monday said the Ministry plans to increase the subvention currently provided to the 10 municipalities and 70 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to effectively manage their affairs and execute their duties.

“The 70 NDCs and 10 municipalities require substantial financial support and with the intervention with the government we will be increasing the subvention currently provided,” the Minister said.

The Ministry will also be supporting local government bodies to manage resources and to further take on infrastructural responsibilities in the communities.

“One of the things we have noticed across this country is the deterioration of our infrastructures and the dilapidated state of our infrastructure,” Dharamlall said.

The Ministry says it intends to further develop and enhance all the NDCs and municipalities and also promises to be transparent and inclusive.

Dharamlall said there will be programmes in collaboration with the ministries of public works, health, education and agriculture so the NDCs and municipalities can benefit.

There will also be the strengthening and planning of the budgets system for these local bodies.

“We will continue to strengthen the capacity of the local organs one of the weakness of the local government system is the capacity of local support to leaders to provide services to communities,” Dharamlall said.

Meanwhile, it was also highlighted that the local government elections will continue under the Irfaan Ali led administration.

“It is also the mandate of President Irfaan Ali that local government elections will continue,” Dharamlall said.

A date has not yet being set for these elections which is held every two years. The local government elections were held for the first time in decades in 2016 when the APNU+AFC government was in office.
