Australian all-rounder Chris Green seems highly likely to take up the role as captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors for this year’s Hero Caribbean Premier League, which will be played solely in Trinidad and Tobago from August 18 to September 10.

On Thursday evening, organisers sent out a WhatsApp messaging informing of a Virtual press conference on Friday with “representatives of each of the six CPL franchises tomorrow”.

Jason Holder (Barbados Tridents), Rayad Emrit (St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots), Daren Sammy (St. Lucia Zouks), Ravmon Powell (Jamaica Tallawahs) and Kieron Pollard (Trinbago Knight Riders) along with Green were listed as respective team representatives for the media engagement.

All of the other players are appointed team captains.

Though Warriors have not officially made an announcement, it was anticipated Green would take up the role in Shoaib Malik’s absence.

An official statement is expected on Friday.

In a recent exclusive interview with News Room Sport, Green was questioned on the additional pressure he would be under, should he be appointed captain.

“I get a lot of support from a lot of the guys in our group, we got a lot of experience now even though are still probably considered one of the younger teams in the competition. We have been able to keep a pretty similar group to last year and even the year before,” he stated.

He added, “A lot of the guys have played a lot of CPL cricket, a lot of international cricket so there is a good group of us with a decent chunk of experience so we can all work together and use that to our advantage to compete against some really strong teams in this competition.”

In 2018, Green, who originally joined the squad as cover for Cameron Delport, eventually took up the role as captain when Malik had to depart midway during the tournament.

Warriors eventually finished second after the preliminary round, but lost the final to Knight Riders.

The off-spinner has played 23 matches for Warriors and has taken 23 wickets to go with an economy rate of 6.4.

Amazon Warriors will play in the opening match against Trinbago Knight Riders at 10:00h.
