Mahaica man dies two weeks after brutal beating

Two weeks after he was severely beaten, 42-year-old Romeo Roopnarine of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara succumbed to his injuries at the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday.

Police said Roopnarine was found by his brother Romel Roopnarine in an unconscious state in the back of his yard with injuries to the head and other parts of the body at about 16:00h on August 14, 2020. He was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The suspect, 37-year-old Linden ‘Ganga Saka’ McCurdy was arrested on August 17 and subsequently charged for attempted murder on August 20.

McCurdy, who appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mettleholzer at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, was not required to plea to the charge and was remanded to prison until September 04, 2020.

It is expected that he will now be charged with murder.

Reports are that on August 14, Roopnarine was beaten by McCurdy during an argument.

Prior to his death, Roopnarine was able to point out the perpetrator to his family.

His body is at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
