Wakenaam businessman robbed $1.2M in cigarettes; three arrested
A businessman of Lot 22 Good Success, Wakenaam Island, was on Thursday night robbed of 350 cartons of cigarette valued $1.2M.
Police in a statement said 81-year-old Noon Persaud secured the items in the tray of a lorry which was parked under a shed in his yard and retired to bed.
On Friday morning at about 05:30h, Persaud awoke and noticed a portion of the zinc fence at the back of his yard was bent. He then made checks in the tray of the lorry and observed the cigarettes were missing.
The exact cost of the cigarettes is $1,248,219.63.
The matter was reported to Sans Souci Police Station and at around 14:00h on Friday, ranks went to Good Success Center Ground where they recovered 318 cartons and eight packs of cigarettes.
Further investigations were conducted which led to the arrest of three males – one from Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo and two from Wakenaam Island.
