The Government has reverted to a countrywide 6pm to 6am curfew as the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to rapidly increase.

The curfew was announced in an order published in the official gazette and will be effective from September 1 to September 30, 2020.

The PPP Government had changed the 8pm to 6am curfew to 9pm to 5am. All the other measures in place in March were also extended and bars, gyms remain closed.

Guyana on August 30 recorded 50 new COVID-19 cases bringing the total number of known cases to 1,234, including 41 deaths.

Recently, Country representative of the Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) Dr William Adu-Krow had urged the Government to revert to the 12-hour curfew.

“I would ask of the Government if you can have 6pm to 6am rather than 9pm to 5am because [when the curfew] starts at 9pm, what it does is, it gives people enough time to hang around with friends and drink up to 8:30pm and then go home.

“If it is 6pm, then from office, you go home,” Dr. Adu-Krow had told the News Room during an interview.
