Sachia Vickery made a winning start to her US Open campaign, defeating American Taylor Townsend in straight sets.
Playing in the opening round of the tournament, Vickery, the USA-based player of Guyanese parentage, won 6-2, 6-4; a significant victory, given the difference in the players’ rankings.
Vickery is ranked 160, while Townsend is 79.
With the win, Vickery, 25, now moves on to play world number 53, Iga Swaitek of Poland, in the second round on Thursday.
