‘Top Cat’ remanded for shooting at cop, having illegal gun & ammo

Twenty-seven-year-old Wayne ‘Top cat’ Castello was on Thursday remanded to prison on two firearm related charges along with discharging a loaded weapon at a Police Officer.

Castello of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The first two charges alleged that on August 27, 2020, at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Castello had in his possession one 9mm pistol together with six rounds of matching ammunition when he is not a licensed firearm holder.

The last charge alleged that on the same day and location Castello discharged a firearm at Police Officer Kester Cosbert with intent to maim, disfigure or cause him actual bodily harm.

Castello was remanded to prison until September 23, 2020, when he is expected to appear before City Magistrate Faith McGusty.

According to reports, on August 27 around 20:05 h, Cosbert and a party of Policemen were on mobile patrol along Genip Lane, East Ruimveldt when they came in contact with Castello, who was wanted for the murder of 23-year-old Navindra Samaroo and a series of robberies.

Castello upon seeing the ranks attempted to escape on a black motorcycle.

However, when the ranks came out of the Police vehicle, Castello pulled out a gun from his pants and began shooting at them. As a result, officer Cosbert returned fire and shot Castello on his leg below his knee.

Costello was subsequently arrested and searched and Police found the illegal gun and ammo.
