Porknocker crushed to death in mining accident
A Porknocker was on Wednesday crushed to death by stones from the edge of a hill at Whitewater Mountain, Konawaruk Backdam in Region Eight.
Police said 59-year-old Donston John known as ‘Rambo’ of St Francis Mission Mahaicony River was working at the backdam with three other Porknockers.
While working at the edge of a hill, several big rocks fell on the victim.
The other men –a 63 year old Porknocker of Kamarang Region Seven, a 52-year-old from Samantha Point, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and a 49- year-old of Wakapow Pameroon – all ran for safety.
Subsequently, they returned to the scene and proceeded to dig the pit with spades; John was already dead when he was retrieved from a hole around 22:00h.
The men were working as punters with a three-inch pump and their detectors at the said location which is owned by a mining company.
The Police visited the scene and escorted the body to Mahdia Regional Hospital.
The body is presently lying at Mahdia Hospital mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
