Two more COVID-19 deaths; 74 new cases

The COVID-19 death toll in Guyana has moved to 58 following the death of a 75 -year-old male from Region Four and an 86-year-old woman from Region One on Monday.

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday announced that the man died at a medical facility while receiving treatment but did not state where the woman died.

“Samples were collected from both at the time of admission and were tested positive for COVID-19,” the Ministry said.

Meanwhile, 74 additional persons were tested positive for COVID-19 bringing the overall number of known cases to 1,958.

The total includes 15 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit and 582 persons in isolation.

Of the new cases, eight were recorded in Region One, six in Region Three, 41 in Region Four, 11 in Region Seven, four in Region Eight, two in Region Nine and two in Region Ten.

The Ministry said 1,302 persons have so far recovered from the disease while 70 suspected cases are in institutional quarantine.

So far, Guyana has tested 11,268 persons for COVID-19.

All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 EMERGENCY MEASURES (NO. 9) which are in effect until September 30, 2020. This order emphasises:

  • the need for correct and consistent use of face masks when leaving their homes;
  • the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others
  • and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
