Zeeburg woman struck down and killed by sleeping driver

A 39-year-old fish vendor was killed Saturday afternoon after she was struck down by car on the Zeeburg Public Road on the West Coast of Demerara.

Dead is Somattie Persaud of Zeeburg.

The News Room understands that the driver of the car, a 44-year-old contractor attached to the Guyana Defence Force fell asleep while driving when he crashed into Persaud from behind; the woman was riding a bicycle at the time.

The driver then crashed into a concrete fence.

Persaud was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.
The driver is in Police custody assisting with the investigation.

The Guyana Police Force is urging all road users to be more alert and to adhere to the five C’s -Care, Caution, Consideration, Common Sense and Courtesy.
