Mahaicony cyclist crushed to death by rice truck


A 68-year-old Wash Clothes, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara man was crushed to death Tuesday after a rice truck ran him over.

Dead is Deonarine Lalchand. The truck was being driven by a 25-year-old resident of Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice.

Police reported that the accident occurred at about 08:05h on the Mahaicony Public Road. The truck and Lalchand, who was on a bicycle, were proceeding south along the eastern side of the road.

The truck driver told the Police that the cyclist suddenly swerved into his path in an attempt to avoid a pothole but the left rear wheel of the truck collided with him.

Lalchand then fell onto the roadway and was run over by the truck. He suffered multiple injuries to the head and body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and pronounced dead.

The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
