Guyana on Friday recorded its 74th COVID-19 death less than 24 hours after two others died.

The latest victim is a 71-year-old woman from Pomeroon-Supenaam Region Two; she died while receiving care at a medical facility, the Ministry of Health revealed.

“The test sample was collected from the deceased at the time of admission and was tested positive for COVID-19 subsequently,” the brief statement from the Ministry noted.

Guyana recorded its 72nd and 73rd COVID-19 deaths Thursday when a 64-year-old man from Potaro-Siparuni, Region Eight and a 94-year-old woman from Region One died.

The male died at 11:00h while receiving treatment at a medical facility; it is the first COVID-19 death for Region Eight.

The 94-year-old woman was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital at around 10:00 and she was subsequently tested positive for the disease, the Ministry of Health said.

This would reflect nine deaths in the last five days. September has been recorded the deadliest month for COVID-19 in Guyana with 33 deaths for the month thus far.

On Thursday, the Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said that the spike in the deaths is a global trend and it is likely to continue unless Guyanese seriously considers and take the preventative measures to flatten the curve.
