Man who admits to killing GDF rank freed by High Court

Sherwin Nero known as ‘Catty’ on Thursday confessed to killing a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier in 2008; he was released from prison after he pleaded guilty to a lesser count of manslaughter and was sentenced for time already served.

Nero, formerly of Dennis Street, Sophia was arraigned before Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court for the capital offence of murder but he opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter which read that on January 23, 2008, at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, he unlawfully killed Ivor Williams.

Williams was shot during an armed confrontation between members of the GDF and gunmen. Nero was represented by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy.

Nero was jointly charged for the offence with Mark Royden Williams called “Mark Durant” for the offence; Williams is on death row for the Bartica Massacre.

Nero has been on remand since June 2008.
