A 35-year-old woman is nursing seven stitches to her left foot after three masked bandits entered her Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD) home on October 3, chopped her and robbed her of jewellery and other valuables.

Fazeena Shafeek, a single mother of one, told the News Room that on the day in question, she returned home with her 14-year-old son at about 19:30h.

Shortly after, she went into her yard to exercise when she heard her son screaming in the house but when she tried to get to him, she was confronted by two men, one armed with a cutlass.

“All I feel two men grabbed me infront of the house and took away my phone and dealt one lash in my back with a cutlass and I fell on the ground. I kept screaming for help and every time I holler, he keep beating me. He chopped me on my foot and one of them was running my son in the house,” Shafeek told the News Room.

The mother said her son ran into the yard and there the three men attempted to get her into the house to retrieve money but due to the chop wound on her left foot, she was unable to stand.

Shafeek gave the bandits four gold bangles valued $60,000, a watch valued $13,000, a cellphone valued $40,000 and a gold ring valued $20,000.

The men then jumped the fence and escaped.
According to Shafeek, the men were hiding in her yard before she arrived home.

“This was well orchestrated,” she said.

A report was made to the Leonora Police station and two of the suspects were captured but released from police custody 72 hours later since none of the stolen items were found in their possession.

The woman is calling for justice as she said the CCTV footage of the incident, though black and white, is sufficient to identify the perpetrators.
