Truck driver killed as drinking buddy reverses into him

Monday night turned ugly for three truck drivers who started off the evening with a casual drink.

According to police reports, the three truck drivers parked at Five Miles Public Road, Bartica and proceeded to consume alcohol at a nearby house. They left off drinking at about 21:15hrs and headed to their trucks.

But moments later, two of the truck drivers were trying to free one of their colleagues who was pinned to the ground by one of the lorries.

Dead is 32 – year-old Deonarine Singh of Canal #1 West Bank Demerara.

According to the driver of Motor Lorry GTT 226, Ramlakan Bishundial, 54, they were all proceeding to their respective lorries when they observed that Singh’s truck, GSS 2121, was stuck in the sand.

As a result, the driver of GNN 5974 assisted by pulling out the said lorry with a rope on the northern side of the said road.

Once he was out of the ditch, Police said Singh came out of his truck and was standing in front of it when the driver of the same truck that had just pulled him out reversed and collided into him, pinning him to the front of his lorry. The impact was so great that it caused Singh’s truck to push backwards and collide with the other truck.

Police said Singh received abrasions to his face and body and fell to the road surface in an unconscious condition.

Once the driver of GNN 5974 saw what happened, he fled the scene.

Singh was afterwards picked up by Bishundial and passersby who placed him in a vehicle and conveyed him to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.

The body of the deceased is presently lying at the said hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem examination.

The other driver, Bishundial, is in custody as the investigations continue.

Police said a DUI test was conducted which showed above the prescribed limit; further inquiries are in progress.
