Ex-police officer among three arrested for robbing teen
A 25-year-old ex-police officer, a 23-year-old technician and 25-year-old construction worker were arrested on Tuesday after robbing a De Willem, West Coast Demerara teenager while on his way home from work.
Darmendra Yusuf, a 19-year-old mechanic, was robbed of $18,000 at about 20:40 hrs while cycling from work along the De Kendren Public Road, WCD.
Police Headquarters reported that Yusuf was stopped by the three suspects who were in a white Toyota Premio car. One of the suspects was dressed as a police officer and started questioning the teen. The teen was questioned as to why he was not wearing a face mask and what was in his pockets.
Yusuf reported that he complied with the suspects who further instructed him to put his money on the bicycle seat which they collected. However, when the suspects attempted to rob him of his cellphone he managed to run away.
While the suspects drove off, Yusuf was able to record the registration number and contacted the police.
Police ranks were able to follow the car in the Uitvlugt Estate Road where the driver abandoned the car with his accomplices and tried to escape.
The driver and the other two suspects were subsequently arrested after a search by the police. The car was also searched and police found a cutlass and an icepick.
Investigations are ongoing.
