The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be implementing an elite training programme focused on honing the skills of the above-average athletes to help them become professionals.

Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr. made this statement during a recent visit to East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) to assess cricket grounds to determine which would be used as the model for the soon-to-be-built multi-purpose sport facilities.

During his tour, the Minister told the youth the elite programme is in keeping with the President’s vision for Guyana to cultivate world-class athletes. He explained that while better facilities are underway, young sportpersons must first practice mental and physical discipline, even as they sharpen their physical skills.

“Eat healthily, sleep regularly, avoid gangs and drugs, and use your time effectively to dedicate yourselves into training to become really great athletes,” Minister Ramson advised them.

He also encouraged them to continue their education, even as they develop their physical abilities.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic is over, you have to return to school because it is an important part of the process [of becoming professional athletes],” he said.

To further encourage the youth, Minister Ramson highlighted several well-known athletes who pursued education even as they became professionals. Former West Indies cricketer Devendra Bishoo was among those in the gathering. (DPI)
