No more Circuit racing for 2020, but Drag Race meet tentative for December

Vice-President of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC), Shairaz Roshandin, has confirmed that while Circuit Racing has been called off for the remainder of 2020, there is a glimmer of hope for one drag race event, possibly in December.

According to Roshandin, the logistics behind a Circuit meet would risk too many persons being exposed to COVID-19 and it was in the best interest to be cancelled.

Pending approval from the COVID-19 Task Force, the Club had reached out to competitors about their interest in a Circuit race, but the response was not positive.

“At this time here we have cancelled all the Circuit events in the interest of the competitors’ safety. COVID-19 numbers are rising every day and without the competitors and the marshalls, we don’t have an event; most of them [competitors] have showed negativity towards competing,” Roshandin told News Room Sport on Tuesday.

However, there is still a glimmer of hope for a Drag Race event to be held before the end of 2020, and live-streamed since no fans would be allowed entry into the South Dakota Circuit.

This event coming to fruition is dependent on the interest shown by drivers.

“With Circuit racing, you need a full team and we had planned to live-stream the event [while] on a Drag Race meet, the possibility exists it is just the driver and car. With drags, we can put better control where they can stay in their car and just come forward to race.”

He added: “We will soon start talking to the Drag racing competitors and see what are the possibilities if they are willing to race.”

If competitors are willing to compete, the Vice-president said they will then liaise with the Task Force for the necessary approval.

Roshandin indicated that they are keen on promoting safety and are against endangering persons, hence the move to have a closed door event, should the necessary approval be granted.
