A man was on Tuesday committed to stand trial at the High Court by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the murder of his 54-year-old father-in-law.

Zaheer Hossain was before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the Preliminary Inquiry was conducted for the offence which alleged that on June 25, 2020, at Riverview Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he murdered Alexi Gomes.

On Tuesday, the Chief Magistrate ruled that based on the evidence, a sufficient case was made out against Hossain for him to stand trial at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

Gomes, a father of three, resided with his wife, daughter and grandson in the United States but was a Guyanese national.

Gomes travelled to Guyana in March with his four-year-old grandson but was stuck here due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

According to reports, Gomes succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the city on June 25 – four days after he was beaten in his head with a piece of wood by his son-in-law, Hossain.

The incident occurred on Father’s Day, June 21, at Lot 6 Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown

A post mortem examination determined that Gomes died from internal bleeding and blunt trauma to the head.
