Car bursts into flames after hitting cyclist, crashing into parked truck


A 36-year-old driver is in police custody after he struck down a 66-year-old pedal cyclist and crashed into a parked truck on the Montrose Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara on Wednesday morning.

Shortly after crashing into the truck, the car burst into flames and destroyed two other trucks which were also parked in the area. The driver of the car, Imran Khan, of Phase Two, Good Hope, ECD, escaped unhurt; he is in police custody while the cyclist, Deokumar Parbo of Success Housing Scheme, is hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the car, PTT 9975, and the cyclist were proceeding west along the road at around 06:05h, and while in the vicinity of Apex Education, the driver saw when the cyclist swerved right from a pool of water.

The driver claimed that he applied brakes and the left side front of the vehicle collided with the cyclist. The driver then lost control of the car when he collided with the truck and burst into flames.
