Captain Texine Daw of Helena No. 2 Mahaica, East Coast Demerara – an officer of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) –is one of the country’s newest attorneys.
Daw was admitted to the bar before Justice Brassington Reynolds on Thursday, according to a congratulatory message from the GDF.
“I was supposed to have become a teacher since most of my family [is] teachers, but deep inside, I wanted to carve my own path. It was while I was in 6th form at Saint Stanislaus College, I realised that I was interested in law, so I set my goal to becoming an attorney-at-law and set out to achieve same,” Captain Daw was quoted as saying.
The mother of one enlisted in the GDF as a soldier in 2008, but always aspired to become an officer. She was granted the opportunity and went on to successfully complete the Standard Officers’ Course.
She acquired her Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School on September 4, 2020. Chief-of-Staff of the GDF, Brigadier Godfrey Bess; Senior Officers, Officers and other ranks also congratulated Captain Daw.
Captain Daw said her time in the army served to improve her personality and standards.
“I am equally happy with being a military officer. The values and standards of the GDF [have] shaped me into the individual I am today. I am grateful for the Guyana Defence Force for the opportunities afforded to me and the discipline and consistency which helped me to persevere throughout my studies,” Captain Daw said.
Captain Daw, also a former student of St Joseph High School, is the mother of three-year-old Jermaine Kyrie Newton.
Congratulations Ms Daw. You and I share a mutual admiration for the Officers of the GDF. A classy group and you fit right in. A role model for all young women and indeed young men as well. Keep up the good work as your Country can use many more like yourself and it is not only the young that you inspire.
