An 11-year-old girl, who tested positive for COVID-19 after she was rushed to the hospital with complications related to cancer, died on Friday.
The child of Grove, East Bank Demerara, was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Wednesday and was admitted to the regular Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she was undergoing treatment.
However, she was also swabbed for a COVID-19 test and the results, which returned on Thursday, showed that she had the novel coronavirus.
She succumbed on Friday in the ICU.
A health official has confirmed that the child’s death will not be treated as a COVID-19 death since she was being treated for another disease.
Guyana has so far recorded 134 COVID-19 deaths, inclusive of three on Friday.
