A Corentyne, Berbice businessman is in high praises for the swift action of the police which led to the apprehension of three suspects and the recovery of over $3M in local currency and SR$7,750.
Forty-two-year-old businessman and boat owner, Deonarine Harripersaud known as “Chona” told the News Room that he parked and secured his vehicle in Number 66 Village at around 10:15h on Friday.
He left the cash in a haversack in the front seat as he made way into the Number 66 Fishery to drop off a tool for his workers who were fixing his boat.
Upon his return to the vehicle, the businessman noticed that the haversack was missing and further checks found that the lock on the passenger side was tampered with.
Prior to the incident, Harripersaud visited two commercial banks and made withdrawals after which he proceeded pay workers at various locations. He believes the suspects may have been tracking his movements.
Following a police report, ranks intercepted a white Toyota Allion on the Liverpool Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice which was proceeding west; a search of the vehicle and occupants revealed the stolen cash.
The driver and two occupants were promptly arrested and the vehicle impounded. The suspects have been identified as a 40-year-old businessman of Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD), a 56-year-old taxi driver of Chateau Margot, ECD and a 38-year-old labourer of Grove, East Bank Demerara.
“I feel very happy and want to thank God and the police for assisting; I never thought I would have get back the money. They work quickly and transfer information from station to station.”
Harripersaud was a victim of a robbery on November 2019, in Mahaica, ECD, where he was relieved of $700,000.
