The Guyana Prison Service has apologised for misinforming the nation that three prisoners had escaped the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara, when in fact, it was only two.

It took the Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels 24 hours to correct the error in a statement issued Sunday.

The two escapees have been identified as murder accused, 48-year-old Phillip Jhogroo of Goed Intent, Leguan, Region Three and Donald Baird, 40, of Hardina Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown who was imprisoned for murder.

The prisoners escaped using a rope made from bed sheets early Saturday from the Lusignan Prison holding bay.

Samuels had said that the escape took place sometime between 01:28h and 01:48h Saturday.

The Guyana Prison Service is urging all family members and members of the public not to offer any support to the escapees and to contact the nearest Police Station on any information on their whereabouts.
