A 20-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) recruit died at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday, weeks after he was hospitalised.

The GDF, in a statement, noted that Orwin Reynolds was undergoing basic recruit training after he was deemed fit for military training by the force medical officer, having successfully passed the force’s medical examination.

The News Room understands that the training commenced on October 31, and two weeks into the training, Reynolds complained of feeling unwell.

He has been hospitalised since and was “treated according to his symptoms, by GDF medical personnel,” the GDF statement noted.

It was further noted that all internal protocols for the delivery of medical care for Reynolds were followed prior to his transfer to the GPHC, where he succumbed.

“The Force extends deepest condolences to the parents, siblings and other relatives of Recruit Orwin Reynolds.”
