Speeding driver flees after killing pedestrian

Police are on the hunt for a driver who has gone into hiding after causing the death of a pedestrian at Hydronie Public Road near Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

Dead is Kayum Alie of Bushy Park Squatting Area, East Bank Essequibo.

Police said the fatal accident occurred on Friday, November 27, 2020 at about 21:55hrs involving a motor car owned by Sheldon Holder of Doctor Charles Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

Investigations revealed that the driver of the motor car was allegedly speeding when they collided with the pedestrian who was standing on the median at the center of the road.

The vehicle reportedly turned turtle before colliding with a nearby shop.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian received injuries to his head and body. The driver then exited the car and made good his escape on foot.

The pedestrian was then picked up by the Police and escorted to Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.

The body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlor Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

The vehicle was lodged at Leonora Police Station to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer while efforts are being made to arrest the driver.

Investigations are ongoing.
