Cyclist dies after struck down by van on Bramfield public road

A 26-year-old cyclist of No. 11 Village, East Berbice-Corentyne died at the Georgetown Public Hospital early Monday, 24hrs after he was struck down by a motor van on the Bramfield Public Road, East Berbice-Corentyne.

Dead is Ganesh Ramlakhan. Police Headquarters in a statement said the accident occurred at about 18:05h on Saturday. The motor van was being driven by a 47-year-old man of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Police reported that the motor van was proceeding east along the northern roadway when it is alleged (by the driver) that Ramlakhan, who was proceeding in the opposite direction, swerved into the path of his vehicle.

The driver said he attempted to swerve to avoid a collision; however, the right side rear view mirror came into contact with Ramlakhan’s left arm. As a result, he fell onto the road and received injuries about his body.

Ramlakhan was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and later transferred to Georgetown.

Police said the driver is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
