The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) on Saturday announced that its six 1.6 Megawatt (MW) Caterpillar Units, which were purchased to boost generating capacity by 9.6MW for the holiday season, have arrived.
Three of the units will be installed at GPL’s Sophia, Georgetown location, while the other three will be installed at GPL’s Onverwagt (West Berbice) location.
“An additional four (4) units, with a total capacity of 6.4MW, have been placed on standby by the supplier in case there is a failure of any of the six units purchased by GPL,” the company said in a statement.
Three of these reserved units will be placed at GPL’s Canefield (East Berbice) location and one at GPL’s Anna Regina (Essequibo Coast) location.
The units are expected to ensure customers on the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) are provided with reliable electricity.
The six (6) power modules and associated transformers were procured at a cost of $475,422,029 and $80,886,430 respectively.
