Police in Region One are hunting for a man, who identified himself as a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and who escaped after he was allegedly found in possession of narcotics.

A statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) disclosed that at around 8:40pm on Saturday, ranks of the GDF and GPF were on mass patrol duty at Kumaka waterfront, North West District (NWD), Region One when they noticed an identifiable male.

The ranks approached the man, who said he is a Private Soldier attached to the GDF and stationed at Mabaruma.

He was at the time standing on the road smoking what appeared to be a cannabis cigarette, police said.

The ranks requested to conduct a search for guns, ammunition, or anything prohibited since the man was carrying a black purse around his neck

Police said, he “pulled out a transparent plastic from the purse and tossed it to the ground and ran away. The ranks pursue him but he managed to escape.”

The transparent plastic was retrieved and was found with a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis which was later weighed and amounted to 56 grams.

The drugs are lodged at the Mabaruma police station. Efforts by the ranks to contact the suspect at the Military Base at Mabaruma proved futile.

Investigations are ongoing.
