Providence woman dies in accident after GDF rank ‘dozed off’

A 33-year-old woman of Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was on Tuesday night killed in an accident at McDoom, EBD after the driver of the car she was travelling in reportedly dozed off.

The accident occurred at about 22:45h. Police Headquarters in a statement on Wednesday said the 23-year-old driver, who is a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), was proceeding along the western carriageway of the McDoom public road when he reportedly felt drowsy. Police said his eyes closed and he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the concrete median at the center of the road.

As a result, Ameena Sooklall, who was a passenger in the car, was injured along with another passenger, 26-year-old Alston Edwards of Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown.

Sooklall was later pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor. The driver and Edwards were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Edwards was treated and sent away while the driver is currently a patient in the accident and emergency unit.

Investigations are ongoing.
