Region Ten, Upper Demerara-Berbice is now an area for concern for health authorities after 86 new positive COVID-19 cases were recorded up to Thursday.
“The area of concern is [Region Ten]; there are a number of communities there that we have been tracking because they have had an increase in cases,” Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said on Thursday during his daily COVID-19 update.
As of December 17, the region recorded a total of 436 cases of which there are 161 active cases.
The News Room was reliably informed that there are 24 positive cases in Wismar, 21 in Amelia’s Ward, and Blueberry Hill has 14 cases, while the town of Linden itself only has eight cases; Ituni is now recording positive cases.
Seven cases were recorded in Ituni after a police officer, who was among over 100 ranks, who was swabbed on Friday last, left quarantine and traveled to the community before receiving his results. The News Room understands that after the result returned positive on Sunday, contact tracing was done during about 90 persons have since been tested.
Meanwhile, 24 cases were also recorded from the Health Ministry’s rapid antigen testing campaign in Unamico, a mining area located between Ituni and Kwakwani in the Region.
So far, the campaign has been rolled out in Puruni, Region Seven and Baramita, Region One where miners will be tested before they return to spend the Christmas holidays with their families.
