    Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Fraser of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice was on Thursday sentenced to 50 months imprisonment for beating a six-year-old boy with a hammer.

    The incident occurred on December 21, at Adelphi Village. Fraser was charged with unlawful wounding.

    The unemployed man pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrates’ Court.

    According to information received, the child was staying with his aunt who is Fraser’s reputed wife; the woman said he came home in an intoxicated state at around 17:00hr and began using a series of expletives.

    At around 18:40 hrs while she was making porridge, he entered the house and asked for his cutlass but fearing the worse, she hid it instead. Fraser then spat into the porridge and hit it off the stove onto her feet.

    She reported that the 25-year-old began physically abusing her but she managed to escape and ran to the Reliance Police Station.

    While she was there she received a report that her reputed husband dragging and beating her six-year-old nephew with a hammer on the dam.

    A search was launched for the accused and he was subsequently arrested.

    Meanwhile, the lad was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated and sent away.
