A 9-year-old boy is now hospitalized after he was struck down on the Canal No.1 access road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Monday.

Police in a statement on Tuesday said the incident occurred at about 16:00 hrs.

Initial enquiries revealed that a motorcar driven by a 38-year-old man of Gap Road La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was proceeding east along the northern side of the road while the boy was standing on the road shoulder.

The driver alleged that while in the process of passing the pedestrian, the 9-year-old stepped forward and collided with the left side front fender and mirror.

As a result, the lad fell onto the road surface a short distance from where he stood and received injuries about his body.

He was picked up by the driver and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. He was examined and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient.

His condition is regarded as stable, police said.

The driver was taken into in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
