Guyanese fisherman killed in Suriname

A twenty-year-old Guyanese fisherman was killed after he intervened in a fight to save his friend in Suriname.

He has been identified as Norris Dundas Vanderstoop of Lot 4 Epsom Village, East Berbice Corentyne.

According to information received, at 19:47hr on Tuesday evening at the River Club Hotel, Paramaribo Suriname, two groups of Guyanese fishermen were involved an altercation. Vanderstoop who was at his apartment closeby noticed one of his friends was being assaulted and went to assist when he was stabbed multiple times about his body.

The News Room was reliably informed nine other persons received injuries and were taken to the hospital.

However, Vanderstoop succumbed before receiving medical attention. On the night of the incident the Police arrested about twenty persons, all Guyanese, but some persons also managed to escape.

The man’s brother, Leroy Vanderstoop said that Norris, has been working as a fisherman for the past four years. He noted due to the pandemic which resulted in the suspension of the Guyana-Suriname ferry service, his brother was unable return home, and was hoping he could do so before the new year.

The family is calling on the Surinamese authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder and arrest the other suspects. They are also calling on the local law enforcement officers to be vigilant in the event the suspects may flee to Guyana.
