Approximately 40 persons within the dorm setting at schools across Guyana have tested positive for COVID-19 since the reopening of schools on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony provided the information while speaking on the issue during Thursday’s COVID-19 update; he said 19 students, 10 teachers and eight staff members have tested positive for the virus at the dorms.

He said a breakdown was available by region but stopped short of providing that information; efforts made by the News Room to get the breakdown from officials at the Health Ministry proved futile.

Dr Anthony assured, however, that the persons are all identified and isolated in keeping with standard protocols. He said testing continues at all dorm facilities across the country.

The minister previously announced that all students who will be returning to the dormitories have to undergo a COVID-19 test; this was also extended to teachers.

On Monday last, Dr Anthony first confirmed that students had tested positive for COVID-19 and was being isolated. The students in isolation will be provided with their daily worksheets to continue their education.

Schools reopened for Grades 10, 11 and 12 students in November 2020 while virtual and other forms of learning continued for other students.
