A 33-year-old pedal cyclist of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was killed in an accident on the Herstelling public road on Friday.

He has been identified as Adiraj Persaud.

Police said the accident occurred at about14:10h and involved a mini-bus driven by a 43-year-old male of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown and a motor lorry driven by a 28-year-old of Canal #2, West Bank Demerara.

Enquiries disclosed that the minibus was proceeding north along the western drive lane when it collided with the pedal cyclist, who was riding from east to west across the road. The bus then crashed into the parked motor lorry.

As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist was flung onto the road’s surface where he received injuries and was subsequently picked up in an unconscious condition by public spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

There he was seen and examined by a doctor and was admitted a patient at the said institution, suffering from a fractured right hand and skull. He died subsequently while receiving treatment.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the mini-bus but no trace of alcohol found.

    Investigations are ongoing.
