Inmate found dead two days after admission to Lusignan prison

A remand inmate of the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara, was discovered dead in his bed Sunday morning by the duty officer.

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS), in a statement, explained that at about 06:00hrs the duty officer was in the process of unlocking the prisoners to shower when he observed remanded prisoner, Roger Samuels laying on his bed motionless.

Immediately, Doctor Britton and the Police Commander were informed of the situation.

One hour later, Dr. Britton conducted an examination on Samuels and pronounced him dead. He was housed in unit #1 along with seven other prisoners.

The prison service did not state whether his death is being investigated as a murder.

According to the statement, Samuels was admitted to prison with several injuries to his body which were inflicted by the public as a result of the alleged offence he committed.

The police are currently investigating the matter.

Samuels, 44, of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was on remand for larceny of a motorcar.

He was admitted to the prison on January 08, 2021

The Prisoners’ Welfare Department is in the process of making contact with prisoner Samuels’ family.

The body will be taken to the Lyken Funeral Home until a post mortem examination is conducted.
