Pensioner perishes in afternoon blaze

Lionel Kyte, a pensioner who was renting a house at 10th Street Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, died this afternoon in a fire that completely destroyed the small wooden building he lived in.

The landlord, who did not want to be named, stated that she had spoken to Mr Kyte, who suffered from a chronic illness, earlier in the day and retired to her home situated directly in front of the burnt rental. She was watching television when she heard a loud noise and saw that the house was up in flames.

Residents formed a bucket brigade but were unable to quell the flames. Mr Kyte leaves to mourn a son who could not be located up to press time.
