Police are on the hunt for a 24-year-old robbery suspect who opened fire on them Monday at Church Road, Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Police Headquarters reported that ranks received a tip and intercepted the motorcar the suspect was driving.
Police said the ranks were on mobile patrol duties when they received information that the suspect who is wanted in connection with several robberies committed between Mahaica and Vigilance, ECD. The suspect, along with several other males suspected to be armed, were inside the car.
According to reports, the ranks signaled the suspect to stop, but he attempted to drive away and ended up crashing into the police vehicle.
Police said the suspect, who was alone in the vehicle at this time, opened the door and discharged a round in the direction of the ranks, who then returned fire.
The suspect then exited the vehicle and began exhanging fire with the ranks. It is believed that he was shot since the ranks discovered a bloodied haversack in an unoccupied yard the suspect escaped into.
Checks were made in the vicinity and surrounding area for the suspect but he could not be found.
The car has since been lodged for analysis at the Cove and John Police Station.
