A 33-year-old Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, resident was on Friday remanded to prison for allegedly robbing a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF.)

Melvin Jeane appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the armed robbery charge.

Particulars of the offence alleged that on January 21, 2021, at Market Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Jeane, while being armed with a gun, robbed Kaya Dover of several items including jewellery, documents and gadgets, valuing $439,000 in total.

He was remanded to prison until February 5, 2021. Reports indicate that Jeane and Dover are known to each other since they live in the same neighbourhood.  On the day in question, at about 04: 45h, Dover was about to enter his Market Street home when he saw Jeane staggering on the road.

It is alleged that Jeane approached Dover and asked him for a drink of water but Jeane then pulled out a gun and placed it to Dover’s chest and relieved him of his personal items.

Jeane then escaped on foot but Dover gave chase and managed to trace Jeane to a house in Mango Lane.  The police were alerted and Jeane was arrested. Some of the stolen items were found in his possession.
