The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring several populated areas across the 10 administrative regions following a spike in positive COVID-19 cases.

During his daily update on Friday, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony revealed that among the areas being closely monitored is New Amsterdam, Region Six (East-Berbice Corentyne), where he said there is a spike in the number of cases.

He explained that health officials in the region are conducting a contact tracing exercise after some 36 new cases were recorded in New Amsterdam.  Among the other areas being closely monitored is Waramadong Village in Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

He did not say how many new cases were recorded there, but advised that monitoring continues through a resident doctor who is supported by other medical personnel. Dr Anthony said testing and monitoring is also ongoing in St Cuthbert’s Mission in the Mahaica River, Region Four.

He said there are currently 20 cases being monitored with a health team slated to be dispatched on Friday.  The Health Minister further explained that in all these areas, appraisals are being done to determine what is contributing to the new cases.

“After that assessment, we will be in a better position to take additional measures,” he added.

There is also monitoring ongoing in Region Five at Moraikobai where there are nine active cases with four recent recoveries.
