From murders to robberies and assault, the high crime rate in Kaneville, on the East Bank of Demerara has resulted in residents being stigmatised and discriminated against when visiting health centres, police stations and even when applying for jobs.
This was revealed by residents when they met with Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton on Wednesday in the community.
A number of residents said they have been robbed more than once and are fearful of living in their homes. They said even more worrisome is the response from the police when a report is made.
The residents were then reassured by Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Linden Isles that there is a process to report any police misconduct.
“I would like to say to the residents of Kaneville, when there is improper misconduct of police officers, report it and when it comes to our attention, we will take action,” the Commander said.
The Commander explained that a WhatsApp group was recently formed between residents and the police to report any crime and police misconduct; he urged the residents to utilise this platform.
Meanwhile, the residents complained that when they visit health centres at neighbouring communities, they are refused treatment because of where they live. To this end, the residents are calling on the authorities to construct a health centre along with a school, recreational facility and police outpost in Kaneville.
In response, Minister Hamilton promised the residents to take up their concerns with the Ministers of Local Government and Regional Development, Culture Youth and Sport and Home Affairs.
