A senior worker with Gaico Construction was killed in an accident at the wharf development project at Houston, East Bank Demerara on Monday.

Dead is Royston Souvenir, 49, of Canal No.1 Polder, West Bank Demerara.

Managing Director of the company, Komal Singh, confirmed the accident, saying it was the first time since the company began operations over 20 years ago that it has had to face such an accident.

Souvenir was working on one of the barges but walked behind one of the excavators, which was turning at the time, causing him to be pinned down.

Mr Singh said the company has a rigid health and safety protocol in place and it was regrettable that the accident occurred.

“We deeply regret this; Royston was one of our senior men and I have known him for a long time,” Mr Singh told the News Room.

The wharf is being constructed near the Guyana Shore Base, which provides services to the oil and gas industry.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the Gaico Construction employee who tragically lost his life today. Our prayers and support go out to his loved ones during this time,” Guyana Shore Base posted on Facebook.
