Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Ramesh Ashram on Monday revealed that is an increase in both fatal accidents and road deaths so far for the year.

“For January this year, compared to last year, we have a 30% increase in fatal accidents and a 40% increase in deaths,” the senior cop told the News Room during an interview.

He added, “Last year, this same period, we had 10 fatal compared to 13 this year, and 10 deaths with 14 this year so far.”

The Traffic Chief urged pedestrians to observe the five ‘Cs’ as well as the Kerb Drill.

“All categories using the road should observe the five Cs; Care, Courtesy, Caution, Consideration, Common sense. They need to observe the Kerb drill even though they’re using a crossing. You have to look right, look left, look right again, and when it is clear, do so quickly across the road”, the traffic chief emphasised.

He also urged pedestrians on the East Bank of Demerara to use the overhead pedestrian crossings.

“They must use it. It’s built there for their purpose, for their safety.”

Construction of overhead pedestrian crosses was designated for communities along the East Bank corridor in 2017.  These efforts were geared at eliminating congestion on the East Bank.
